We’re joining in the list fever this year – though not before the year is more or less through – with the favourite 2011 records from Evening of Light HQ. Of course we missed tons of good releases out there, but these at least are things we particularly enjoyed. Thanks to all the artists and labels for sharing their music with us.

First the top 10, in alphabetical order.

The A. Lords – The A. Lords (Rif Mountain) [Our Review]

The LP followup to 2006′s self-titled 3″ is a masterpiece of pastoral, almost ambient, folk. Nicholas Palmer and Michael Tanner‘s blend of many acoustic instruments with field recordings, and quite a few fortuitous guest appearances, makes for a wonderful album that started out as a relaxed summer favourite and turned into a classic for all seasons.

~

Bass Communion – Cenotaph (Tonefloat)

Steven Wilson‘s drone project hits bullseye with this CD/LP release on tonefloat. The four massive tracks on this album combine ultra-deep drones with pulsating beats in a flawless production. One of the most hypnotic releases of the year!

~

Burial Hex – Book of Delusions (Brave Mysteries) [Our Review]

Aural insanity is one way to describe the utterly original and uncompromising output of Burial Hex the past few years. It appears the project is ending after this year, but Book of Delusions is one of the testaments to its genius, combining drones, samples, organ, piano, demented screams, and hypnotic beats into an unholy musical mixture.

~

Momick – Momick (Bladud Flies!) [Our Review]

Richard Moult and Michael Lawrence bring their lysergic piano morphing to a debut full length filled with melancholic melodies and soundscapes, including beautiful guest performances by David Tibet on vocals and Mark Baigent on oboe.

~

Obsequiae – Suspended in the Brume of Eos (Bindrune) [Our Review]

This duo’s excellent blend of death/black metal and mediaeval musical inspiration makes for an album steeped in energy, solid riffs, and awesome melodies. Our metal tip of the year!

~

Premonition Factory – The Sense of Time (Longstreet) [Our Review]

A flawless ambient album, and a crown on a long tradition. Sjaak Overgaauw‘s live looping technique is marvellous and the mixture of light and dark, soft and harsh on this album marks the coming of age of a most excellent project. This one just keeps on growing and is not only one of our favourite albums of this year, but one of our favourite albums, period.

~

Rain Drinkers – Springtide (Reverb Worship)

This project is one of our favourite discoveries of the year, and their blend of organic ambient and cinematic music (for lack of a better description) is consistently excellent. Springtide is their finest work, though, featuring marvellous violin and string work, heavy drones, organ, and tons of atmosphere.

~

Sand Snowman – The World’s Not Worth It (Tonefloat) [Our Review]

Sand Snowman’s most recent album is another winner, with a particularly excellent mix of progressive folk and rock songs, as well as soundscape-like episodes. Great use of piano, flutes, clarinet, and a guest appearance by Steven Wilson make this an excellent new full-length.

~

Tenhi – Saivo (Prophecy) [Our Review]

Refined as ever, Tenhi’s latest is easily one of the best albums of the year in the neofolk area. Despite staying true to their own style, they’re still quite a distance ahead of most others in this area and Saivo is as much a pleasure to listen as its predecessor from five years ago.

~

Maarten van der Vleuten – The Scars Remain (Tonefloat)

Of course we’re quite partial to the Van der Vleuten album we released ourselves in 2010, but this year’s return to vinyl (and to tonefloat) is simply a masterpiece. His original electronic compositions are masterfully fused with influences and themes from martial industrial, but with Maarten’s own critical view on the subject matter.

The following albums, too, are all particularly recommended in their own right as quality releases from 2011:

Alcest – Le Secret (Prophecy) [Our Review]:
Slightly underwhelming, the Norwegians’ latest is still a quality album, particularly the massive spoken word ending.

Vidna Obmana – 1987-2007 – Chasing the Odyssey (Tonefloat) [Our Review]:

Spear of Gold and Seraphim Bone Part One

Delectable darkness comes from Aderlating recently, a project by Mories of Gnaw Their Tongues and Eric of Mowlawner. Not surprisingly, the album mixes dark ambient and drones with obscure black metal outbursts to create a dynamic set of compositions. Naturally, these styles mix well in creating a dark and oppressive atmosphere with occult undertones. The proportion between more and less intense pieces is balanced very well, with a good variance between pure abstract soundscapes, all-out black metal fury, and wild noisy parts with free drums.

All in all an excellent album for those particular moods, and a nice supplement to what I’ve already heard from Gnaw Their Tongues. The noisy ritual atmosphere on Spear of Gold... should appeal to lovers of experimental black metal and occult drones and ambient alike.

Cubs - The Whispering Woods [discogs]

The Whispering Woods

The second Cubs release again features a long list of figures from Irish and British freefolk, collaborating on a series of mostly instrumental tracks. Prominent are lovely (semi-)improvised guitar and violin arrangements, use of samples and electronic effects, exemplifying the experimental folk sound of today. On the whole this album is a very pleasant, relaxing listen, particularly tracks like “Fortis Green”, “Hidden Valley” and “Frozen Lake”, alternating melancholic and more upbeat moods. Another nice track is “Blackberry Lane”, which also has a decidedly cute video by tinyEPICs.

The Whispering Woods is not as strong as it perhaps might have been if you look at individual talent of some of the people involved (Aaron Hurley, David Colohan, Michael Tanner, Vicky Langan, James Rider, etc.). Not all tracks are equally captivating or involved, and the vocals are a bit lacklustre at times. Nevertheless, this is recommended listening for everyone with an ear open for experimental and freefolk, and only the latest of many fine such releases on Rusted Rail and Deadslackstring, who co-released this one.

Dementia ad Vitam – De Gaia, le Poison… [MySpace]

De Gaia, le Poison...

French project Dementia ad Vitam focuses on rather heavy kind of neoclassical music the combines mostly piano and violin-based melodies with at times bombastic compositions, and some vocal outbursts here and there. At the same time, there are quite a few calm moments and gently flowing classically-inspired waltzes. Most of the tracks on this album are relatively short, allowing an interesting spectrum of different moods. Sometimes, a bit more time is reserved, such as for the acoustic guitar-based “A Présent Si Triste”. The variation between such tracks and the shorter impressions is pleasant, and makes the album flow quite nicely, even though it is over an hour long.

Musical inspiration or distant parallels may be found with artists such as Elend, Dargaard, and Arcana , though the moods and compositions on this album make Dementia ad Vitam stand apart more than enough. Although I must say this album leaves me relatively untouched emotionally, the compositions and atmospheres on De Gaia… are rich and interesting, and definitely worth checking out for anyone with a soft spot for high-strung and lush neoclassical works.

Szymon Kaliski – For Isolated Recollections [discogs]

Young polish ambient artist Szymon Kaliski impressed quite a few folks with his release Out of Forgetting in late 2010. Now he’s back with a second EP on Hibernate that delivers more of the same delicate drones and ambient pieces. Kaliski’s tracks are minimal, sparse compositions, relying on little glitches, noises and melodic loops. Most of the melodies have a piano-like tinge to them, and the general atmosphere of these quartet of tracks is that of someone sitting at a piano in a dusty room, keying out little pieces of memory. There’s something spacious and contemplative about it that makes For Isolated Recollections an extremely pleasant and calming listening experience.

So far, Kaliski hasn’t greatly astounded me with his music, but little works like this one are sure to find their way into the playlist of many ambient lovers, and I for one look forward to hearing more subtle and gentle recordings like this one. Promising work!

With five releases in two years to their name, and counting, The Driftwood Manor are one of Ireland’s most prolific artists in the experimental folk scene. The band is centered around singer, songwriter, and guitarist Eddie Keenan, who enlists a cast of supporting musicians that varies with each release. The first two releases, A Gathering and Every Light Goes Out Eventually, were covered separately on Evening of Light, but 2010′s releases have followed each other so quickly that a one-piece feature might suit these albums just as well as three separate reviews.

The crucial question when a band puts out three releases in one year is whether it’s all any good. Thankfully, the answer so far for The Driftwood Manor is a simple resounding yes. Judging from the nearly twenty tracks on these offerings, the well of songs has not run dry in the least, and I expect we can look forward to more interesting material in the near future.

As a brief introduction, let me return to A Gathering, the first album, which held nine tracks clocking in at about 30 minutes. That album had a slightly poppy folk sound, some rock influences, but also an experimental touch to it and a hefty dose of melancholy, on the whole quite accessible as a modern folk album. The second release, though, 2009′s EP Every Light Goes Out Eventually, was a profoundly sad duo of long mantra-like soundscapes, meditating on death and loss, capped by the brief and beautiful vocal ending of “Before it Is Time”. With this release, which came as a pleasant surprise to me, Keenan and his band showed that they had at least one leg firmly rooted in the experimental music world.

The Same Figure, Leaving

This delightful diversity continues with this year’s albums, starting with the second full-length The Same Figure, Leaving, released in handmade packaging on French label Ruralfaune. The album marks a return to the folk songs of the first one, though with slightly less rock/pop leanings. A bit of an Americana sound is thrown into the mix as well, something which suits the general sound of the band admirably. The focus is once more of Keenan’s voice and guitar, with excellent support by Neil Fitzgibbon on fiddle and Bean Dolan on double bass, among others. “A Coat Against the Winter”, the opener, is a wonderful example of the band’s introspective and melancholic sound and lyrical leanings:

“We can have another whiskey / Before we step into the outside / As a coat against the winter / Like a word against the silence”

Another highlight is the swinging mandolin-based “The Lasting Final Hurt”, featuring perfect support work from Fitzgibbon’s fiddle and Audrey Ryan on backing vocals. A final mention goes to the closing and title track, a wonderful ode to calm acceptance, where most if not all of the players on this album come together, particularly in the layered choruses of Keenan, Anne Marie Hynes, and for this one also Dave Colohan.

Holy Ghost

We move on to Holy Ghost, the second EP, released as part of the 3″ series by Rusted Rail. This time around we get six tracks, pretty much in the same style as The Same Figure, Leaving, but all with a power of their own. Therein lies the strength of Keenan’s songwriting: the ability to come up with quite a number of songs in a coherent style that manage to be good enough in their own right to command the listener’s attention. Particular attention must go to the superb “Bury Me Alive”, a song with a strong dose of ballad and spiritual influence, sounding like it could come straight from some countryside church in the American (or Irish?) outback. But really, all the other stracks are simply strong as well; Holy Ghost is solid until the end.

Found Photographs of Ancestors

The final release is the EP Found Photographs of Ancestors, released in August 2010 by Apollolaan Recordings. This handmade affair, limited to 50 copies, is a sequel to Every Light Goes Out Eventually, again combining drones, folk and some eastern musical influences. Keenan works with Colohan as a duo here, both very skilled by now in creating captivating experimental soundscapes. Apparently, these EPs are going to form a trilogy, with the third instalment still upcoming. I must say I found the first part just a tad more involving than this one, but this is still a fine piece of folky drone, and I eagerly await the final part of the trilogy.

So far, 2010 has brought us three fine releases from this Irish group, so I sincerely recommend them for anyone who is interested in alternative and experimental folk. Some of these might be sold out by now, as they’ve appeared in limited editions, but they might be available through mailorders still.

It’s been six years since the release of the first album by Phantom Dog Beneath the Moon on Deserted Village in 2004. There is little surprise for me that this follow up charts a significant growth in the project’s music. The recruitment of Scott McLaughlin as a permanent second band member has certainly contributed to this, as the ghostly and dark singer/songwriter folk has been enriched with a broader instrumentarium and more varied compositions.

This is showcased perfectly in the first four tracks. “As Perceived by Mice” lays a nice flowing base with piano and guitar, and Aaron Hurley‘s trademark high voice, still pleasantly reminiscent of Thom Yorke here and there. The beautiful “Poems” is very intimate and subtle, weaving soft guitar lines with swooping cello and delicate touches of glockenspiel and music box. “Stealing Owls” and “Hide and Seek” introduce Barry Hurley on drums, lending these tracks a stronger rhythmic touch, bordering on subtle psych rock here and there, particularly in the last track’s harpsichord sections.

The second half of the album holds more good things; The fifth and seventh track are simple and stylish guitar songs in the band’s original vein, while “A Shimmering Clown” is a darkly beautiful soundscape with distant, sorrowful vocals. The closer, “Halloween”, is equally excellent, with a superb development and crashing rock ending.

The edges are rough, which can be expected from an underground project like this. But look past that, and you’ve got a beautiful, honest and highly original album, lovingly released and handmade by Rusted Rail. Another gem from Ireland, highly recommended to dark folk lovers.

release: The Shadow Is That Hidden
format: 3″ CDr
year of release: 2009
label: Rusted Rail
duration: 20:46

detailed info: discogs.com

One of the latest in the highly recognisable series of 3″ EPs put out by Irish label Rusted Rail is this new one by Yawning Chasm, the solo project of Aaron Coyne, who is also one half of Mirakil Whip.

Six lo-fi singer/songwriter tracks make up this release, centered around voice and guitar, both well-covered in effects, resulting in dreamy, eerie folk songs with flowing circular melodies. It’s music that will definitely appeal to you if you fancy the sound of, for example, labelmates Phantom Dog Beneath the Moon, or other purveyors of ghostly modern folk tunes.

Though each song had its own charm, as a whole the EP is not immediately very impressive or original. However, depending on your mood and surroundings, these songs can definitely hit the right spot. Sitting in the train, with the summer sun in your face, the landscape zipping by, it works perfectly in several parts.

Not something to buy blindly, but if your interest is piqued do give it a listen. Rusted Rail EPs generally hold something nice for the sympathetic ear.

Reviewed by O.S.

Tracklist:

1. To The Void (2:28)
2. Stars Are Going Out (2:43)
3. Tumble River (4:02)
4. Monsters (3:54)
5. Your Bones Will Bleach White (3:48)
6. Distant Fires (3:51)

Irish label Rusted Rail have released a new Agitated Radio Pilot EP, entitled A Field Day.

It contains six tracks in a style that reminds me a bit of Dave’s earlier Australia-inspired works, with a bit of Holt thrown in as well. Summery feelings, a bit of the usual melancholia, and a nice instrumentation featuring, among others, Bean Dolan and Eddie Keenan of Resurrection Fern and The Driftwood Manor, respectively.

Check out the samples on the Rusted Rail page, and be sure to pick this one up if you enjoy Dave’s works.

On a side note, it’s interesting that this release shows such a different side of Agitated Radio Pilot than the EP which we hope to put out on Evening of Light ourselves somewhere during the coming winter. You might be in for a surprise!
