Norbert Rodenkirchen / Robbie Lee / James Ilgenfritz
Telegraph Harp, 2018
The opening flute suggests an album of pieces from traditional (early) music somewhere in the world, but Opalescence gradually opens up to something else, something more. There is experimentation that can only spring from a jazz background, and moments where the two meet and intertwine.
Given the careers of the musicians, this is far from surprising. Rodenkirchen is a mainstay of mediaeval music, and Ilgenfritz and Lee have both earned their stripes in modern experimental and (post-)jazz music.
It’s an album then, where bass and an incredible range of woodwinds chart an intriguing journey that skirts along the traditions of various spaces and places.
