We’re joining in the list fever this year – though not before the year is more or less through – with the favourite 2011 records from Evening of Light HQ. Of course we missed tons of good releases out there, but these at least are things we particularly enjoyed. Thanks to all the artists and labels for sharing their music with us.

First the top 10, in alphabetical order.

The A. Lords – The A. Lords (Rif Mountain) [Our Review]

The LP followup to 2006′s self-titled 3″ is a masterpiece of pastoral, almost ambient, folk. Nicholas Palmer and Michael Tanner‘s blend of many acoustic instruments with field recordings, and quite a few fortuitous guest appearances, makes for a wonderful album that started out as a relaxed summer favourite and turned into a classic for all seasons.

~

Bass Communion – Cenotaph (Tonefloat)

Steven Wilson‘s drone project hits bullseye with this CD/LP release on tonefloat. The four massive tracks on this album combine ultra-deep drones with pulsating beats in a flawless production. One of the most hypnotic releases of the year!

~

Burial Hex – Book of Delusions (Brave Mysteries) [Our Review]

Aural insanity is one way to describe the utterly original and uncompromising output of Burial Hex the past few years. It appears the project is ending after this year, but Book of Delusions is one of the testaments to its genius, combining drones, samples, organ, piano, demented screams, and hypnotic beats into an unholy musical mixture.

~

Momick – Momick (Bladud Flies!) [Our Review]

Richard Moult and Michael Lawrence bring their lysergic piano morphing to a debut full length filled with melancholic melodies and soundscapes, including beautiful guest performances by David Tibet on vocals and Mark Baigent on oboe.

~

Obsequiae – Suspended in the Brume of Eos (Bindrune) [Our Review]

This duo’s excellent blend of death/black metal and mediaeval musical inspiration makes for an album steeped in energy, solid riffs, and awesome melodies. Our metal tip of the year!

~

Premonition Factory – The Sense of Time (Longstreet) [Our Review]

A flawless ambient album, and a crown on a long tradition. Sjaak Overgaauw‘s live looping technique is marvellous and the mixture of light and dark, soft and harsh on this album marks the coming of age of a most excellent project. This one just keeps on growing and is not only one of our favourite albums of this year, but one of our favourite albums, period.

~

Rain Drinkers – Springtide (Reverb Worship)

This project is one of our favourite discoveries of the year, and their blend of organic ambient and cinematic music (for lack of a better description) is consistently excellent. Springtide is their finest work, though, featuring marvellous violin and string work, heavy drones, organ, and tons of atmosphere.

~

Sand Snowman – The World’s Not Worth It (Tonefloat) [Our Review]

Sand Snowman’s most recent album is another winner, with a particularly excellent mix of progressive folk and rock songs, as well as soundscape-like episodes. Great use of piano, flutes, clarinet, and a guest appearance by Steven Wilson make this an excellent new full-length.

~

Tenhi – Saivo (Prophecy) [Our Review]

Refined as ever, Tenhi’s latest is easily one of the best albums of the year in the neofolk area. Despite staying true to their own style, they’re still quite a distance ahead of most others in this area and Saivo is as much a pleasure to listen as its predecessor from five years ago.

~

Maarten van der Vleuten – The Scars Remain (Tonefloat)

Of course we’re quite partial to the Van der Vleuten album we released ourselves in 2010, but this year’s return to vinyl (and to tonefloat) is simply a masterpiece. His original electronic compositions are masterfully fused with influences and themes from martial industrial, but with Maarten’s own critical view on the subject matter.

The following albums, too, are all particularly recommended in their own right as quality releases from 2011:

Alcest – Le Secret (Prophecy) [Our Review]:
Rerecording of Alcest’s excellent shoegaze/black metal debut EP.

Peter Bjärgö – The Architecture of Melancholy (Cyclic Law):
The Arcana frontman presents seven nice darkwave/gothic tracks.

Kate Bush – 50 Words for Snow (Fish People):
Surprising and very fulfilling, Bush’s minimal jazzy piano landscapes delight.

Circulation of Light – LEDNAH : Seven Meditations On G.F. Handel’s Organ Concertos Op. 4 (Brave Mysteries):
Acoustic/ambient reinterpretations of a classical piece.

The Cloisters – Little Winter [Our Review]:
Yule album combining harp and ambient by Michael Tanner and Aine O’Dwyer.

Jon DeRosa – Anchored EP (Silber) [Our Review]:
Four pure and lovely indie pop songs from the man behind Aarktica.

The Doomed Bird of Providence – Will Ever Pray (Front and Follow) [Our Review]:
Original and intense nautical neofolk.

The Driftwood Manor – Shelter EP (Rusted Rail):
Five lovely Irish folk tracks on this bonus EP to The Same Figure, Leaving.

Joonatan Elokuu – Earth, Sky, Moon and Sun EP (Utupuu):
Recorded in Holland, Elokuu presents a wonderful blend of neofolk, ambient, and field recordings.

Higuma – Pacific Fog Dreams (Root Strata) [Our Review]:
Gorgeous guitar and vocal drones.

Andrew King – Deus Ignotus (Epiphany) [Our Review]:
Powerful traditional balladry, with a touch of industrial aesthetics.

Machinist – Of What Once Was (Moving Furniture):
Sophisticated drones from the Netherlands.

Richard Moult – Celestial King for a Year (Second Language) [Our Review]:
Experimental compositions for strings and voice.

Raising Holy Sparks – Beyond the Unnamed Bay (Fort Evil Fruit):
Agitated Radio Pilot’s David Colohan returns with his new project, blending lovely folk tunes and experimental electronics.

Rose Croix – Rose Croix (Brave Mysteries) [Our Review]:
Ethereal and martial industrial meet on this nostalgic cassette mini-album.

Ulver – Wars of the Roses (K-Scope) [Our Review]:
Slightly underwhelming, the Norwegians’ latest is still a quality album, particularly the massive spoken word ending.

Vidna Obmana – 1987-2007 – Chasing the Odyssey (Tonefloat) [Our Review]:
Mostly older material, but this 8LP box of ambient glory is too beautiful not to remind you of.

Vortex – Rockdrill (Cyclic Law):
Ritual and rhythmic ambient goodness from this Golgatha side project.

Apart from :EOL03:, there will be a few more ARP releases on other labels, but after that, David is laying the project to rest. Another reason to look back!

|˟˟| (pronounced Gate) is a project dedicated to improvised and experimental music, founded in 2009 in Tokyo by Lajos Ishibashi-Brons, originally from the Netherlands. As a solo project, he released the first two releases Discomfort and No Exit. Later in 2009, Takahito Hayashi joined the project, playing tenor sax and assorted other woodwinds. Together they recorded this year’s album Iterations. Recently, Lajos has been forced to reduce the project to a solo effort again, and he is currently preparing new material.

One of the key aspects of |˟˟|‘s music is definitely the use of unorthodox and handmade instruments. A full description can be found on the official homepage, but important to mention are at least the sousen, a four-string instrument used both for rhythms and loops, and for melodic parts, and an electric morin khuur, a bowed instrument from Mongolian tradition. With these instruments and others, and tools to create effects and loops, Lajos creates his fully improvised, which are selected for inclusion on releases without any post-editing.

Continuing below, this retrospective will now take a look at the three releases mentioned above, and give a sketch of the unique sounds and experiments produced by |˟˟| thus far. In addition to these releases, there is also the 2010 self-released CDr Kaminaritaki.

Discomfort

Discomfort is the debut release, put out in 2009 by The Pet Goat Records in a handmade CDr package. Like all of the albums to follow, it is a full one, clocking over one hour in music, distributed over songs ranging from quite brief (around two minutes) to long tracks beyond the ten-minute mark. On most tracks on this release, the use of chords on a heavily downtuned and distorted guitar is the prominent noisemaker, placing the music well in the direction of drone doom. |˟˟|‘s sound remains unique though, through the use of all sorts of weird noises and rhythms from Lajos’ one-of-a-kind instruments. Another line that runs through the album is a sort of free rock with a bluesy touch, such as on the track “34 ss.gt”. Here we can hear cues from classic experimental artists like Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. The combination of these elements makes for a unique sound that has little parallels, as far as I know, in contemporary underground music.

No Exit

No Exit was released on Fluttery Records, also in 2009, and it highlights some different areas of Lajos’ solo sound. Guitars are still present here and there, but the album leans less on thick chords and drones than No Exit. There is a more prominent role for more abstract sounds, weird noise, and other experimental whims. There are, for example, ghostly string murmurs on the short “38 ss.mk”, but a chugging noise attack in loops on “13 ss.rd.gt”. “8 ss.rd.mk” contains sounds that lie somewhere between shifting radio noises and the scratching of records. There are also several longer soundscapes on this album, culminating in the 27-minute final track. This one, entitled “27 ss.rd.mk.bs”, starts out very subtly, with a soft rhythmic loop, some bow scratchings, and occasional bass notes, later adding different sounds, though with the same low intensity.

A brief not about the systematic track titles: they contain information about the instruments used in the improvisation, and I presume the order in which they were recorded.

Iterations

The most recent album, also released on Fluttery, is Iterations. As mentioned above, Hayashi adds various woodwinds to this album, resulting in a further evolution of the sound of this project. In general, the tracks on Iterations can be said to be a bit more minimalistic, greatly downplaying the role of guitar and dense textures, instead opting for more space and breathing room. This allows Hayashi’s saxophone and flute to come forth clearly, as well as some melodies by Lajos’ more unorthodox instruments. The key sound that emanates from this album is that of free music: whether it be jazzy or with a more – at times Japanese – freefolk tinge, or just straight-out noisiness. As on previous albums, ideas sometimes take the form of brief two-minute sketches, but often the tracks are spread out over longer periods of time, here resulting in a number of sessions that are calm and expansive.

On the whole, I find the music presented by |˟˟| on these three releases fascinating and varied, each having its own particular focus of style, while staying absolutely faithful to the philosophy of free improvisation. Discomfort is best described as an exercise in heavy drone doom and free rock; No Exit is looser and noisier, setting a step further in the direction of abstract improvisations; Iterations, finally, is a bit more organic, heading in the direction of free folk and jazz, while not totally relinquishing noisy and industrial sounds. Not all compositions on these releases are equally strong or captivating, but Lajos manages to avoid for the greater part the improvisational pitfalls of meaningless meandering. The structures imposed by looping rhythms and sounds work admirably in this context, and they give the listener something to hang on to while other instruments set out into the great unknown.

In short, if you are interested in strictly improvised music with an uncompromising and original musical philosophy, these albums are all recommended for your listening pleasure, each one geared slightly towards particular concrete musical styles that can help as a reference point for the listener.

With five releases in two years to their name, and counting, The Driftwood Manor are one of Ireland’s most prolific artists in the experimental folk scene. The band is centered around singer, songwriter, and guitarist Eddie Keenan, who enlists a cast of supporting musicians that varies with each release. The first two releases, A Gathering and Every Light Goes Out Eventually, were covered separately on Evening of Light, but 2010′s releases have followed each other so quickly that a one-piece feature might suit these albums just as well as three separate reviews.

The crucial question when a band puts out three releases in one year is whether it’s all any good. Thankfully, the answer so far for The Driftwood Manor is a simple resounding yes. Judging from the nearly twenty tracks on these offerings, the well of songs has not run dry in the least, and I expect we can look forward to more interesting material in the near future.

As a brief introduction, let me return to A Gathering, the first album, which held nine tracks clocking in at about 30 minutes. That album had a slightly poppy folk sound, some rock influences, but also an experimental touch to it and a hefty dose of melancholy, on the whole quite accessible as a modern folk album. The second release, though, 2009′s EP Every Light Goes Out Eventually, was a profoundly sad duo of long mantra-like soundscapes, meditating on death and loss, capped by the brief and beautiful vocal ending of “Before it Is Time”. With this release, which came as a pleasant surprise to me, Keenan and his band showed that they had at least one leg firmly rooted in the experimental music world.

The Same Figure, Leaving

This delightful diversity continues with this year’s albums, starting with the second full-length The Same Figure, Leaving, released in handmade packaging on French label Ruralfaune. The album marks a return to the folk songs of the first one, though with slightly less rock/pop leanings. A bit of an Americana sound is thrown into the mix as well, something which suits the general sound of the band admirably. The focus is once more of Keenan’s voice and guitar, with excellent support by Neil Fitzgibbon on fiddle and Bean Dolan on double bass, among others. “A Coat Against the Winter”, the opener, is a wonderful example of the band’s introspective and melancholic sound and lyrical leanings:

“We can have another whiskey / Before we step into the outside / As a coat against the winter / Like a word against the silence”

Another highlight is the swinging mandolin-based “The Lasting Final Hurt”, featuring perfect support work from Fitzgibbon’s fiddle and Audrey Ryan on backing vocals. A final mention goes to the closing and title track, a wonderful ode to calm acceptance, where most if not all of the players on this album come together, particularly in the layered choruses of Keenan, Anne Marie Hynes, and for this one also Dave Colohan.

Holy Ghost

We move on to Holy Ghost, the second EP, released as part of the 3″ series by Rusted Rail. This time around we get six tracks, pretty much in the same style as The Same Figure, Leaving, but all with a power of their own. Therein lies the strength of Keenan’s songwriting: the ability to come up with quite a number of songs in a coherent style that manage to be good enough in their own right to command the listener’s attention. Particular attention must go to the superb “Bury Me Alive”, a song with a strong dose of ballad and spiritual influence, sounding like it could come straight from some countryside church in the American (or Irish?) outback. But really, all the other stracks are simply strong as well; Holy Ghost is solid until the end.

Found Photographs of Ancestors

The final release is the EP Found Photographs of Ancestors, released in August 2010 by Apollolaan Recordings. This handmade affair, limited to 50 copies, is a sequel to Every Light Goes Out Eventually, again combining drones, folk and some eastern musical influences. Keenan works with Colohan as a duo here, both very skilled by now in creating captivating experimental soundscapes. Apparently, these EPs are going to form a trilogy, with the third instalment still upcoming. I must say I found the first part just a tad more involving than this one, but this is still a fine piece of folky drone, and I eagerly await the final part of the trilogy.

So far, 2010 has brought us three fine releases from this Irish group, so I sincerely recommend them for anyone who is interested in alternative and experimental folk. Some of these might be sold out by now, as they’ve appeared in limited editions, but they might be available through mailorders still.

2009 has been a productive year for English artist and musician Richard Skelton. I’ve been following his work for over two years and am still amazed by his unique style and approach to music. It combines an open mentality towards the British countryside and history with layered, melancholic acoustic music, flowing and ambient.

In this post, I’ll give a brief overview of some of his recent releases that I found particularly inspiring.

Richard releases his music under different monikers, each corresponding to subtle differences in instrumentation and composition. Clouwbeck, for example, seems to be mostly about music written for bowed string instruments. This was clear in the project’s first release, A Moraine (2007), but again in this year’s Wolfrahm, released on the Polish label Shining Day.

Clouwbeck - Wolfrahm (CD, 2009)

Its six tracks flow gently, reaching different levels of intensity, and touching upon various emotions along the way. The minimalistic packaging is suitable and stylish, though perhaps a bit bland compared to the loving packaging of Richard’s own releases on Sustain-Release.

Another release this year was the EP Tide of Bells & The Sea by Heidika, the project that constituted the first Sustain-Release outing in June 2005. I haven’t heard that original recording, so I can’t comment on how this new one compares to it, but by itself, the EP is a fascinating piece of work.

Heidika - Tide of Bells & The Sea (CDr, 2007)

Richard described it as one of his most electronic works, but that should be interpreted in context. I assume some electronic editing and warping most have taken place, but the final result is still quite organic and exudes a mystical atmosphere. A softly pulsating acoustic drone forms the background of this one 18+ minute track, which evokes images of the twilit hours before dawn, when the day comes to life. Like many of the releases on Richard’s own label, this one was produced in small individual runs with differing artwork; the original release date was set late in 2007, but it might still be available in some version or other.

Another ‘old’ project getting a new release was Carousell, with the beautiful album Black Swallow & Other Songs. This, too, was released in a limited edition on Sustain-Release. It is more song and melody-oriented than most of Richard’s other works, though never compromising on the style or atmosphere.

Caroussell - Black Swallow & Other Songs (CDr, 2009)

It proves that the instrumentation and approach that is general to all of Richard’s works also works when the compositions are less ambient and more to the point. The use of some field recordings (church bells) and the addition of wordless female vocals by Autumn Grieve on the final track further improve on the diversity of this album.

Perhaps the most beautiful of all Richard’s recent releases is Marking Time, the first to be released under his own name. It was released on CD by the Australian Preservation Records in 2008. I missed out on that version as I believe it sold out rather quickly. This year, however, it was rereleased on vinyl by Type Records, a wonderful decision. That’s the version I eventually purchased (also sold out now, though) and have grown to love.

Richard Skelton - Marking Time (LP, 2009)

The album’s seven tracks basically showcase many of Richard’s different sides. Some tracks, like the impressive “Brook” and the heartbreaking “Fold” focus on bowed string melodies, while other tracks utilise guitar and harp pickings, piano, and other sounds. Throughout all the tracks, Richard’s unique artistic perspective is represented, the ability to instil human emotions into a natural landscape, and expressing that through sound. All of his releases feature this element to some degree, but Marking Time is arguably one of the best. Highly recommended, and definitely worth looking up, even if you have to go second-hand.

These weren’t the only new releases from Skelton recently. Mention needs to go out to the following:
the LP/CD reworking of A Broken Consort‘s Box of Birch on Tompkins Square Records (2009);
Also by A Broken Consort: the second part of Crow Autumn on Sustain-Release;
Finally, Richard contributed to the latest EP by aforementioned Autumn Grieve, Stray Birds, which has by now seen a couple of editions and comes highly recommended to lovers of ambient folk with moody female vocals. It’s been released on Corbel Stone Press, the joint label of these two artists.

Last but not least, keep your eye out for news concerning Richard’s project Landings, where he combines music, text and brilliant photography. I’ve harvested most of the material from when Landings was a blog, and taken together it’s a great gesamtkunstwerk, wonderfully documenting some of Richard’s forays into the British landscape and history. The blog’s been taken offline since, but there has been a very limited release in book form, hopefully to be continued or repressed some time soon.
