Eerst iets over de artwork. Toen ik dit album kreeg en ik de titel "bereid je voor op oorlog" combineerde met het swastika-symbool op de cover (eigenlijk twee êoh-runen), wist ik niet helemaal zeker wat ik hier van moest denken. Maar als je over dingen twijfelt, is het altijd een goed idee om de artiest zelf om uitleg te vragen, en dit is dan ook wat ik deed. Hier volgt een kort citaat uit zijn uitleg over het concept achter het album en de omslag.

"[A]ny political movement, be that from a few thousand years ago, to that of last century, really doesn't interest me, and I have no intent to be associated with anything - again, be that either with the project, or in my own everyday life too. [...] I really have no desire to present the idea of war as an ideal state either - I'm neither overtly pro or anti war - I serve as an infantry solider in the New Zealand Army, so my view, and involvement, and my comprehension of what a war actually means I hope is beyond the superficial and fantastic perceptions of some people otherwise.
The symbol that is on the cover is an Ehwaz Cross, and realistically partakes therefore from part of the initial raison d'etre and dynamic of Vanargandr - movement, as indeed linked to the participation and place of Fenrir in the Northern conception of the Cosmos - in essence, the Cosmic cycle which saw at first the creation of the world and the "Shadow" entities (Surt being most obvious, though also the Jotun, and eventually the children of Loki), its subsequent stagnation and culminating demise via Ragnarok, and rebirth (whether seen as xtian addition or not). The association with war, as the title of "Praeparet Bellum", is really something else, as war here is seen as an actual part of life (and the full phrase from which "Praeparet Bellum" comes is in itself something else - not a praise of war, certainly)... Note that the titles, and indeed everything else with Vanargandr, make no hint, no intimation of interest, overt or covert, of anything to do with politics, let alone redundant ideas of nationalism etc - the symbol used for the cover is used purely for its association with Fenrir, nothing more, nothing less, and the title infact used as more of a metaphysical proposition.
Basically, and ultimately, Vanargandr is a magickal project, the intent and meaning behind each track, and each work in total, is buried and layered with manifold meaning - politics however, not being one."

Dit citaat beslaat een groot stuk van deze recensie, maar dat is misschien ook wel nodig in de scene van dit moment, waar symbolen zeer veel betekenissen en associaties kunnen oproepen. Ik vind echter dat het aan de artiest is om zijn/haar gevoelens uit te drukken op de manier die hij/zij daarvoor het meest geschikt vindt. We zouden de inhoud niet moeten beoordelen op de verpakking, en er naar moeten streven verder te kijken.

Laten we het nu maar over de muziek hebben. De stijl op deze EP is vergelijkbaar met die op de Valtivar promo: diepe en duistere drones, met een obscure minimalitische stijl. Zoals duidelijk wordt uit het openingsnummer, is de geluidskwaliteit enigszins beter en zijn er meer subtiele muzikale lagen te onderscheiden in de muzikale duisternis. Ik vind echter nog steeds dat de lagere frequenties van het geluidssprectrum te sterk zijn, op zo'n manier dat het de andere frequenties teveel wegdrukt. Ondanks dit, slagen deze nummers er wel in een duistere sfeer te creëren, die direct uit de stoffige gangen van de geest lijken te komen. Soms lijken de nummers rustig mee te drijven op een zee van drones en mist, zoals "Incipit, Sinister, (Daemonic) Hammer". Andere nummers hebben een wat directere aanpak met noise-achtige invloeden, zoals "Consecration, and Celebration, of Being and Becoming".

Ik denk dat dit album iets beter is dan het voorgaande promo, en het bevat zeker wat aardige, obscure ambient. Er is echter nog steeds veel ruimte voor verbetering, en een goede productie met wat subtiele effecten zouden de muziek veel goed doen.
