Listen up, psychfolk fans, for this is a treat none of you can afford to miss. Winged We Were is a tribute to perhaps the single most influential band of the scene. I'm talking about The Incredible String Band, of course. The Argoknot family of Timothy Renner and Prydwyn has joined forces with ISB fanzine 'Be glad for the song has no ending' to bring you this nice collection of covers.

The most remarkable thing about this CD is that although the interpretations are sometimes rather free, the collection itself perfectly represents the many different sides of The Incredible String Band. Sometimes conventional but nice folkrock, such as The Glad Undertakers' "Black Jack David". Now and then beautiful popsongs like "Red Hair" by Walking the Witch. Even some gothic neofolk with Tänzers Traum's "The Sailor and the Dancer". But often just plain weird psychedelia, like The Ursula Tree's interpretation of "Witches Hat". It's pretty clear that the influence of ISB has been huge, especially when you consider that there is a host of other artists that might just as well have been featured on this CD.

Personal favourites from this album are B'eirth's sweet version of "Painting Box", Tim Moon's energetic version of "Swift as the Wind", Ziggurat's beautiful live rendition of "Bright Morning Stars", and especially Prydwyn's Green Crown with its brilliant ritual folk interpretation of - what else - "Three is a Green Crown". Some other tracks were a bit less interesting, and I was a bit disappointed by Stone Breath's version of "Osiris", because I was expecting something more along the lines of the beautiful live cover version In Gowan Ring did on Webs Among the Din. Nevertheless, it all ranges from decent to excellent.

This CD is a must for all ISB fans and for lovers of psychfolk in general. Great artists, great tracks, great cover artwork by Timothy Renner. Can't go wrong!
