Roto Visage is an American dark ambient project that has made several free online releases. La Muse Cachée is the third full-length album. The tracks on this album are excellently produced and contain many sound layers, which is as it should be.

The album starts off strongly with "spiral ignite flesh", a very varied song with many different sound sources, including a warped bit of classical piano. Loads of things to check out here, plus a great dark atmosphere. Sadly, the next few tracks sink into the background too much, even with headphones to check out the details. I missed that tiny bit of melody that you sometimes find in this kind of bleak tracks. "into transformation" is a little more pronounced again, with a sample of a popular-scientific explanation of the process of nuclear fission. The short "smudge" has the manipulated voice of a man, arranged so that it's as if he has some form of aphasia. "(ab)normal cell growth" is a bit more up my alley again, with a very dark, noisy industrial ambient start, and an excellent further evolution. This track fades into "the children are time machines", which is the closing track, and also quite good, due to its distorted melody and obscure sense of rhythm.

Despite about 20 minutes in the middle of the album which I didn't find that interesting, this album contains enough material that is very good, and which should give ambient enthusiasts some good listens. Definitely worth the download.
