In Yonder Garden is a project by Antonello Cresti (
Nihil Project), Simon Lewis (
Phoenix Cube) and Vittorio Nistri (
Deadburger), so that's two Italians and an Englishman. On this self-titled EP (or is it a mini-album?), we're treated to a well succeeded blend of modern folk and psychedelic ambient electronics.
Throughout the five songs, there appears a variety of instruments, tempos and themes, which prevents this album from getting boring at any point. The first two "fragments of a ritual" suit one another well, and contain a mix of strings, flute, bells and ritual chanting, which in the second song evolves into a
Tangerine Dream-like piece of pschychelica, halfway support by another fine string section. "Descend" starts out quietly, but soon changes into an upbeat track with strings, banjo and nice reverbing vocals, ebbing away at the end into a calm electric guitar piece. "Broken Sleep" is a serene piece with some effects and a recurring vocal line about "the golden spark" and "silver thread". Sadly enough, the Italian accent of one of the singers is a bit too prominent on this track, which distracts from the otherwise great spacey atmosphere. The album closes with the slightly longer "Blessing". This song gradually evolves into the theme that dominates the second half of it. The dreamy end with soft vocals and a beautiful string section is probably the highlight of the album.
A very well done debut album for
In Yonder Garden, which certainly must not be ignored by people who aren't afraid of a bit of nostalgic psychedelia, nor by lovers of avant-garde folk. Released - and well-priced! - by the English MP3 download label
Woven Wheat Whispers. Buying albums on MP3 might seem a bit iffy at first, but that is surely not justified when it concerns these people. WWW offers a high-quality service and a wide selection of underground folk.
