IMWI is a Spanish neofolk band, who have self-released two albums so far. This one is their first, from 2003. It contains ten very pleasant, relaxing neofolk songs, that form a nice counterpoint to the many military or bombastic projects in the scene.
The songs are carried by the excellent guitar playing and soft, deep vocals. Here and there, some percussion is added, and pieces of piano/keyboard melody, the latter of which doesn't sound as good as the other instruments. The vocals also sound a bit obscure in parts. Besides that, the production is pretty good for a home release.
Not all tracks are particularly interesting, but they all have a good quality, and the atmosphere is constant and solid. More importantly, there are several songs which are excellent, such as "In Maywood Eye", where
IMWI shows that it can come up with very effective melodies and arrangements. Other highlights are "The Land Of A Thousand Sunrise", "To All Sailors On Near Shores", and especially "To A Closer Paradise", the absolute best track on the album. All these tracks display a serene, dark atmosphere that is a fine addition to the neofolk genre.
Despite beginners' flaws, I consider this an very good neofolk debut. It has a bit of the troubadour feeling of
In Gowan Ring (intentionally, I'm sure), but it also reminds me slightly of
Empyrium's
Where At Night The Wood Grouse Plays, in terms of atmosphere and melody. The album might also appeal to lovers of
Forseti and the more romantic side of neofolk.
