HoarfrosT is a Polish electronic project, combining ambient sounds with industrial percussion, and this is the debut EP, released for free on the Kaos Ex Machina netlabel.
This project perhaps presents a slightly conventional sound, as the combination of elements described above might indicate. However, there is something in the compactness of this EP that makes it a succes despite the lack of originality. The six tracks are all short, giving just enough time to explore brief soundscapes with samples and manipulated sounds and melodies, often with percussion backing. The percussion sounds quite nice and pronounced, rather than abstract, and it makes the release quite catchy at times. The atmosphere is not as oppressive as the title suggests. Though the sound evokes an obscure feeling, it is not as harsh as the noisy track HoarfrosT did for the See You in Sanitarium compilation, for example.
All in all, it will take a bit more than this to convince in the future. HoarfrosT does need more of a vision of its own, and perhaps a little more richness in the sound to be able to stand out in the saturated scene of today's industrial and dark ambient. Those are future worries, however. This is still an interesting debut EP, and since it's free, there's no reason why you shouldn't give it a listen if you are into this area of music.
