Firma is an ambient / industrial project from Flanders, by two members, Nelekflow and Istari, the latter of which was also a member of doom metal bands Thee Plague of Gentlemen and Pantheist. DesCon was their first and only release so far, which is a great pity, as it is full of pretty original dark sounds.
"Waanzin" is a track packed with dark drones, hisses, rhythmic elements, and industrial sounds in the true sense of the word, but the main asset is the poetic spoken word part in Flemish. Trust me when I say that you don't hear that often in this kind of releases. "Bron Van Ontwaring" is a bit more relaxed, with a softly evolving synth drone and low distorted vocals over looped industrial rhythms and watery samples. "Elephantosis" is based upon a sample of Anthony Hopkins delivering his medical analysis of John Merrick from The Elephant Man. This is combined with some of the usual sounds of an ambient repertoire, and this track is exemplary of how ambient can put movie samples to good use. Closing track "Struction" is the most aggressive one, with a heavy beat and hysteric samples of an angry woman. Definitely an industrial floor-filler.
Despite the fairly conventional atmosphere, this is a great release, and a must for your industrial ambient download list. I hope these guys will revive Firma from its cryostate some time in the future.
