For Greater Good is an ambient project of three Belgians that has been around for a couple of years. Recently, things have started rolling for them, having completed this promo, and appearing on the Cold Meat Industry compilation All My Dead Friends with the first track, "Le Jugement du Roi en Jaune". This is alongside well-known artists as Atrium Carceri and Beyond Sensory Experience, so congratulations to the band.
This first track is perhaps the best one on this promo, being a very catchy track based on a bombastic and epic synth melody and heavy percussion. Normally I'm not too attracted to this heavy use of synthesisers, and since they have a violinist, I'd expect the violin to be a bit more to the front of the mix, instead of its synthetic counterparts. Nevertheless, the track appeals to me, and I wouldn't mind hearing this on a dark dance night. "Dawn over Dachau" is as ominous as it sounds, a calm but unsettling dark ambient track, which is overlaid with a sad keyboard melody halfway. The weeping distortion and mournful cries give me a fairly sure idea that it is the dawn over the concentration camp, rather than just the German town we're dealing with. "Love Your Terrorist" is another dark track, and very oppressive because of the barrage of voice samples. The gloomy drones and incredibly heavy beat finish it off nicely.
As stated on the website, For Greater Good strives to depict the world of today through their music, and they've succeeded in tackling at least some subjects on this short promo. Confrontation with darker chapters from history is never a strange concept in this kind of music, and For Greater Good fit right in. So, we now have a nice promo, and I'm sure we'll be hearing more from this band in the future. A name to remember for lovers of a more bombastic style of ambient and (power)electronics.
