The Ever Green Tree is a sort of EP release, a little shorter than most albums, and just fitting on a 12" LP. However, I feel this is more than 'just' an EP, because it contains a perfect distillation of Johan Levin's accessible style of ambient, mixed with some acoustics and an industrial touch.
The title track is a very good and powerful mix of synth soundscapes, industrial scrapings, and even an acoustic guitar song structure during the larger part of the track. "Hibernation" takes things into a familiar direction, a sort of typical 'Cold Meat Industry' dark ambient sound. Relatively 'active', with a clearly discernible melodic movement in the waves, and subtle percussion and rhythms in the background, overlayed with industrial sound effects. The last track of the first side, "Legends", is in a similar vein, but this time with a prominent role for heavier drones and hissing sounds, along with the usual melodic elements.
Side B also contains three tracks, but they are each a bit shorter. "Stalkinghorse" blends a very nice synth melody with more metallic sounds and a pulsating 'burning' sound that provides a driving rhythm. "Hallmark" features a similar distorted sound, along with another great melody, and a repeating voice sample. Two very good tracks. The album finishes off with "This Vale of Tears", a track that also appears on the The Last Bleak Days compilation. This one is perhaps the most minimalist track of the album, with only soft waves and a faint rhythm. A serene, but dark ending to this LP.
Despite me mentioning Desiderii Marginis as a typical CMI project, this 12" was released on Kaosthetik, a french label that specialises in luxury vinyl releases. Apart from the beautiful gatefold cover of this LP, we also get an A2 poster with a very dark, gothic image. All in all, a very nice presentation of a very good selection of tracks, for a minimal price. Limited to 500 copies, but still available in some places, this is highly recommended to fans of the project and of this particular accessible style of ambient.
