Bloody Woods is a project by Bai Shui and Gu Dao from China. On this short EP, they display a nice blend of both calm, melancholic and upbeat neofolk music, with a little touch of their Chinese musical background.
Apocalypse of the Sound starts with "Yun (The Cloud)", which is a calm instrumental track on acoustic guitar and flute, which reminds me a bit of late Empyrium because of its melancholy, longing atmosphere. After a short intro, the title track changes into an catchy upbeat dance with guitar, whistle and percussion. "Maliry" is the first track with vocals, which are a bit obscure and backwards in the mix. This song turns up-tempo after a while as well, joining the uptempo style of the previous, only this time with vocals. "Fey" is the last of the songs in this style, combining a pastoral guitar intro, with a more developed second half. The EP ends with "Hebrew Lullaby", my favourite track off this release. It combines string and flute melodies of the far east with the Hebrew song of the middle east, resulting in an original, melancholic track.
I think this is a promising demo EP, in which Bloody Woods combines cultural elements of multiple continents. It's well worth checking out if you are into neofolk or melancholic acoustic music, and definitely a project to keep an eye on.
