Your Turn To Go It Alone is the latest album of Agitated Radio Pilot, founded in 1993. It is released on two 3" CD-Rs in a purple gatefold sleeve and a small loose paper with the tracklist. The man behind Agitated Radio Pilot is the Irish David Colohan, who is accompanied by various guest musicians on this album.
Your Turn... could be described as introspective, melancholic folk, with an ambient piece. The lyrics have different subjects, but the recurring theme is clearly abandonment by a lover. The album begins with a calm clarinet and piano intro and proceeds with the beautiful, sober "Hold Back The Sea", where Colohan's clear voice is accompanied by acoustic guitar, and later backed up by organ. "Get Well Soon" has the same melancholic feel. Hereafter comes the slightly happier sounding "Becky Came By", and the only up-tempo song, "Fireplace Road". The title track is again very introspective with just vocals, guitar and trumpet. "Last Ride" is definately one of the highlights for me, because of the great flute melody during the chorus. "Emmet St. 2" is another instrumental, with just piano and flute. The second CD starts with "We Can't Last", a longer song that begins calmly with guitar and piano and evolves into a trumpet solo with some unfortunately poor sounding percussion samples. Your Turn... closes with an ambient track where all guest musicians join in. This song combines nicely with the melancholia on the rest of the album, and leads you to desolate landscapes.
The main asset of this album is Colohan's clear and natural way of singing. Because of his reach, the songs sound varied and this contributes greatly to the fact that this album doesn't bore me for a moment. The songs all have a unique character, yet blend together perfectly. Also the production is well done, and the instruments are well balanced. The only lesser point is the lack of attention paid to the layout. I would have liked to have some lyrics and more artwork, and perhaps some more info about Agitated Radio Pilot itself. But, all in all, this is one of the strongest releases I've heard this year, and I'm looking forward to the albums that are in the works.
