On a cold friday night in February we marched south on Breda, to attend a performance of the new project from The Hague, Hou en Trou, as well as Nebelwerfer, who also hail from that city. Electron is a cultural centre in a warehouse, not too far from the station; a small room with a bar did service as a concert space. Unfortunately, there wasn't a very large turnout, probably caused both by the location and the fact that on the same night, 'Summer Darkness: Winter Edition' was going down in Utrecht. An extra disappointment to those who did show up was that Hou en Trou was not able to play, due to one of the bandmembers being ill. Consequently, Nebelwerfer played an extra long, improvised set, which definitely made up for the loss.

Nebelwerfer is a duo consisting of Louis V. and Lothar Thorsten, founded in 2003. Two albums were self-released in 2004, and after that there was a period of silence for the band. Recently, the project has sprung to life again, and this gig bears testament to that. Both gentlemen play a number different instruments, among which are guitar, violin, vocals, percussion, and electronics. Utilising these, they improvised a two-part set, that went from ambient and noise to industrial and martial. Often, the instruments were severely distorted to bring forth massive drones and other kinds of racket, and that made this show quite heavy at times. The vibrations even caused several glass objects, which were standing on some installations in the room, to plummet to their destruction. But the calmer pieces were also quite good, with serene soundscapes and use of samples. Thanks to the improvised nature of the gig, it really showed that Louis and Lothar are well attuned to eachother, and capable of supporting eachother perfectly in a live setting; the result was almost an hour of intriguing experimental music.

For us, this was a pleasant introduction to Nebelwerfer, and we hope that the project will pick up steam in the near future. We're also really looking forward to future Hou en Trou activity, for we've really become curious by now.
